New Groundbreaking GIZ VTN Vocational Venture in the North

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development (MYASD) and its implementing arm, the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KFW) on behalf of the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany are to set up the Sri Lankan German Training Institute (SLGTI) for which their Vocational Training in the North (VTN) Project was initiated in 2012.

In April 2011, a KfW mission conducted an assessment mission. Meetings were held with representatives of the following institutions: the Presidential Task Force for the North of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Economic Development (MED), the Department of National Planning, the Department of External Resources (DER), the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development (MYASD), the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), the KfW Entwicklungsbank and GIZ.

Inception of the Vocational Training project

In 2010, the Government of Sri Lanka and the Federal Republic of Germany nurtured the idea of a new vocational training project for the regions affected by the war. In that year, GIZ conducted a feasibility study to determine the need for such an institute and to discuss the intended design and location.
